Foundation plantings are house-hugging plants that should complement your home. The idea is simple: Foundation plants should enhance your home, make it more welcoming, and tie it to the surrounding landscape. At Dragonfly Landscape Design we don’t always follow the rules, but our front yard foundation planting does typically follow these guidelines:

• Work with the architecture and overall style of your house - Preserve views of key architectural features and avoid cutting off light to windows
• Plant tall trees to frame the corners of the home - This will soften the hard edge of the house while keeping you focused on the face of the house (corner trees also extend a small house, making it appear larger)
• Frame the front door to the house - This is your grand entrance!
• Bridge the gap between the entryway and framing pieces - The remaining foundation shrubbery should bridge and fill the gaps between the focal pieces, while working in harmony with your home and hardscaping
• Remember good garden design - Plan to vary color (even with evergreens) and play with texture and shape
