Committed to our Community
Below are just a few examples of our commitment to planting in and supporting the planting efforts in our local community.
9/11 Memorial Garden of Remembrance in Quogue
In 2021, Dragonfly Landscape Design was proud to support the efforts of the Westhampton Garden Club which was a recipient of a Plant America Grant for this project. The Garden Club earned national recognition when it obtained a number of plants from the Battery Gardens of Remembrance in lower Manhattan which is dedicated to those who lost their lives on September 11, as well as the survivors of the attacks - many of whom fled to The Battery after the terrorist attack. We provided a team to install the plants at the Quogue Garden of Remembrance, dedicated on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Hopefully, this small space offers some solace to those in need...
Quogue Library Schoolhouse Garden
2021 was a busy year for the Westhampton Garden Club. They also spearheaded the installation of an herb garden at the Quogue Library Schoolhouse and we were happy to support their efforts with the layout of the garden/masonry and with the planting of herbs appropriate to the age of the Schoolhouse, providing four distinct values: Medicinal, Culinary, Fragrance, and Economic. We love the garden and suggest you stop by for a visit (and the new library is wonderful to visit too).
An “English Garden by the Sea” in Westhampton Beach
In 2019, the Dragonfly team worked with the dedicated Westhampton Garden Club members to re-imagine the existing Westhampton Beach Village Green Garden. In December 2018, the collaborators started discussing plans for the garden update. The new garden has a formal structure (reminiscent of the Glovers Lane Park) but includes plant materials that thrive locally, including multiple varieties of ornamental grasses, providing an intersection between “beach” and “English Garden”. In addition to offering a beautiful backdrop for outdoor activities at the Village Green, the garden also has an educational focus with all plants identified. We are proud to support the efforts of the Garden Club and continue to maintain this garden to the present day!
Traffic Circles can be "English Gardens by the Sea" too!
In 2023, following the Main Street Revitalization Project, the Dragonfly team worked with the dedicated Westhampton Garden Club to install perennial gardens within the two traffic circles on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. These gardens are similar in style to the Village Green Garden on Mill Road and provide a greater opportunity to beautify Main Street. The circles are maintained through the volunteer efforts of the Dragonfly team.
Supporting Pollinators at Glovers Park
In 2023, Dragonfly was delighted to be back in Glovers Park - this time volunteering our services to support the Westhampton Free Library with the installation of a pollinator garden in a quiet corner of the park (not far from the Bocce Court that we installed in 2015). We applaud the Library's overarching goal - to conform with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in supporting the habitats of pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and moths as well as other insects (like dragonflies), birds, and bats. The pollinator garden is also maintained through the volunteer efforts of the Dragonfly team.
Trees are Simply Amazing (at Earth Day and All Year Long)
Trees, clean air, and water, all slow climate change, ease poverty and hunger, prevent species loss, and feed the human soul. We are fortunate to plant many trees as part of what we do - we are also fortunate to work in a community that also cares about trees! We participate in the annual Earth Day celebration offered collectively by the Eastern Long Island Audubon Society, Westhampton Beach Earth Day, and the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. To date, we've given away thousands of little trees with the hope that we are encouraging others to care about trees too. Visit us at the Refuge and we’ll be happy to share a tree with you!
Quogue Wildlife Refuge’s Butterfly Garden, Go Native for Wildlife Initiative, & Wild Night for Wild Life!
Dragonfly Landscape Design has twice helped to overhaul the Butterfly Garden at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. We've added a pondless water feature and masonry in surrounding areas and we've provided clean-up services too. Since 2021, we've supported the Refuge's Go Native for Wildlife initiative and have provided new plants focused on pollinators - installing butterfly-friendly and bee-friendly Milkweed, Joe Pye Weed, New England Aster, and Beebalm (among others). We plan to help the Refuge refresh the garden annually, continuing to keep the spotlight on native plants. We also plan to continue supporting the Refuge's Wild Night for Wildlife Gala. We Dragonflies love gardens too...
Flowers (& the Performing Arts) on Main Street
We love the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center and we try to help a bit by planting and maintaining their flowerpots and helping with any other landscaping needs that may arise. (We’ve planted behind the theatre and designed and installed the temporary plants for their fundraising Casino Night.) They don’t typically need a lot of trees inside, but if they do, we’re here...
Flowers (& Bocce) on Glovers Lane
Hidden on Glovers Lane in Westhampton Beach, you will find the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce office and the Glovers Lane Park. In 2015, in conjunction with two other landscapers, we were proud to donate our labor to help Mayor Maria Moore transform the property adjacent to the Chamber offices into a formal, but family-friendly, park (complete with a Dragonfly-donated bocce court). Since then, the Village has maintained this park, but we stop by now and then to take a look, and we now donate the flowers for the Chamber’s annual flower pots.
We’re at the Hampton Classic Too
As a Preferred Partner of the Hampton Classic, each year we donate floral and plant design (and plants) for multiple jumps in the Hampton Classic Grand Prix ring. Dragonfly has been a part of the Hampton Classis since our inception, and each year we are still a little awestruck to walk the same jump course as the best riders in the world...
